The Blind Spot

The challenge

Close your left eye. Hold the image at arm's length and focus your right eye on the cross symbol (+). Slowly move the image closer to your face. At a certain distance, the dot on the right will completely disappear.

Objective

Locate your eye's natural blind spot and observe the brain's ability to fill in missing information.

Materials

Just your eyes and the image.

Description

Every human eye has a blind spot, but we never notice it because the brain actively reconstructs the missing information. This is called perceptual filling-in. It is a powerful demonstration that what we see is not a direct feed from our eyes — it is a constructed model created by the brain. The same principle applies to how we fill in gaps in our understanding of other people and situations.
